The idea of astronomy star parties is not a brand new concept, it can be traced back to George III from the United Kingdom, who was a scholar of astronomy and mathematics. Star parties can last anywhere from a few days to a week and are held all over the world and attract large numbers of people who are passionate about astronomy.

A star party can be a simple event from a local astronomy club gathering at a dark sky site to educate the public about celestial offers of the sky to a large complex gathering including vendors selling their products and hosting lectures.

What is needed for a star party?

A telescope (one doesn't need to bring their own), there are always willing people ready to show off the latest star or planet they have found with their telescope.

Binoculars

A CCD Camera is a nice tool to capture the moon, planets and other great celestial objects.

Red light flashlight (as not to ruin others night vision.)

Star charts and books

Eyepieces

Laptop

Electrical power cords and inverter

A chair and snacks and warm beverages.

It does get cold especially on the late night observing, so remember to have warm clothing and sturdy shoes. When parking vehicles park away from the observing area as not to ruin someone's lifetime shot with the white light from the car lights. Also remember to drive slowly as not to track dust that can ruin telescopes and other equipment.

Star parties can be a lot of fun and many parties include such activities such as pot-luck dinners, games. Most parties are a quiet affair, but are a very rich and rewarding educational experience that stargazers do not forget.
